I took my sons to go see Godzilla the other night and it was quite the experience. You really need to go in expecting thin plot, dumb ( really dumb) physics, and TOTALLY AMAZING VISUALS. It won’t let you down then.
While this movie really was a CGI extravaganza, design was still done in some pretty old fashioned ways. Artist Simon Lee shared some of his process with some interesting photos on twitter. I’m going to copy and paste some of it here, because embedded twitter threads suck, but you really should go see his thread on twitter and follow him.
Monster Zero taking shape – Godzilla: King of the Monsters design THREAD
To figure out the designs of Ghidorah, I must have created close to 60 sculptures of various scales to get to the final design. These were done for battle movement testing
These were done for wings, heads & tails balance tests. Not only does the design have to look cool, it’d have to work and balance as well, and I’d made sure of that
Once most of the designs were in place, I started piecing together Monster Zero
That’s the end of that thread. Seriously though, you should go follow Simon, he posts great stuff all the time. He had previously posted a bit of concepts from the movie as well, such as this early concept sculpt.
Simons sculpts are so fantastic and seem to carry such natural weight, I simply love them. You can find his professional work on his website, and you’ll also note that he offers classes, a tempting prospect.
