When discussing practical effects, the Matrix isn’t usually the first movie to pop into people’s minds. However, this CGI extravaganza can also serve as a great reminder that nearly all movies mix in massive amounts of practical effects, even those known for digital stuff.
Even the scene with a fraction of a second of a breaking arm required that someone come up with a rig that was good looking and repeatable.
Another great example is when Keanu gets that little robot shrimp installed, then removed from his stomach. Sure the bot itself was CGI but his bulging and undulating stomach wasn’t.
