Gremlins is getting a revival with “minimal CGI”

I’m pretty skeptical, and somewhat jaded when it comes to reboots and looooong awaited sequels. Typically, my opinion is that we should just let it be, the nostalgia that has built up over the years surrounding these properties has such a tendency to overpower any attempt at making a good product. Our expectations aren’t only that the movie be good and entertaining, but also that it makes us feel like we did when we saw the original, and that part of it is simply impossible.

However, I have to admit that seeing this article on the return of Gremlins to the big screen, I began to feel the unavoidable eagerness welling up inside. I like the Gremlins franchise, it was so silly and self deprecating at points, that it may be hard to screw it up.

One quote from this slashfilm interview really stands out.

“Oh, without a doubt, minimal CGI,” Columbus said. “CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers lives a little easier. It was brutal. It was like a marathon every night for those guys. In the bar scene alone there were 18 [or] 20 people behind the bar. No one had any space to move. It was just hellish for those guys so CGI will simplify that a little bit but it’s all puppets.”

That is good to hear. I think the stiff little puppets really brought so much character of their own, I’m eager to see what they produce.

Then again, at this point, the movie is only a script, so who knows when we’ll see it so we can judge for ourselves.
