The Practical Effects That Never Were: I am legend

I Am Legend has been one of those stories that has had many chances to come to life as a movie, based on the original book. You’ve most likely seen or at least heard of a few of these versions. The most recent keeping the name of the book and starring Will Smith. I thought it was a fun post apocalyptic story, but like many people, I really couldn’t stand the CGI monsters (and I actually like CGI!). They were just… bad. Of course, if you get too high up on your horse about this movie, you can always go back and watch Omega Man and feel a little bit better about modern story telling.

One frustrating bit about this most recent incarnation is that at one point it was slated to have Ridley Scott as the director and practical effects for the monsters. That could have been a very interesting version to watch. This little interview shows a bit of how the monsters would have looked. I don’t know about you, but I find these much creepier.

If you haven’t read I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, you probably should. Like most cases where the book comes first, it is somewhat better, if a little dated. Buy it at the link, and you help me pay for this site!
