Matte paintings are akin to magic. It simply blows my mind that hand painted frames have been able to seamlessly (more or less) blend in with live action stuff. I mean, I realize that some of it stands out when you go back and look but you’d be surprised how much matte painting passes without you even noticing.
This is a fun little documentary on the matte paintings of ILM, so expect to see some scenes you’re very familiar with.
