Behind The Scenes: The Animatronics of Child’s Play 2019

I finally got an opportunity to watch the 2019 remake of Child’s Play. I’m not going to review the movie itself, like many that have come out in the past few years, all opinions of this are going to be tainted by the fact that it is a remake of a popular cult film.  Instead, I’d like to praise the effects team for their animatronic and puppet work!

I fully expected Chucky to end up as a cgi faced super agile murder machine, and I was quite pleased to see the quirky movement of servos and cable work. If there ever was a character where this kind of motion fit more perfectly, I can’t think of one!

The Stan Winston School of effects has shared a rather in-depth break down of the construction and operation of Chucky and it is a fascinating read. I highly recommend you check it out!

In the linked article, they really dish on the entire construction and design, even control of the doll from pupetteering to digital eyes that are controlled by playstation gamepads. It really looks like a lot of love went into this project.
